Why Proper Communication Benefits You and Your Team

Communication is an integral part of our lives, both at work and at home. At MAS, we understand the power of proper communication, and how communicating effectively not only grows your own potential at work, but also the potential and rapport of your team, both with each other, and with your customers.

Proper communication at work means lesser conflict, increased engagement and satisfaction with the team, better relationships with customers and suppliers, and, in general, a more productive and focused work environment. Regardless of what role you play within a company, it is important to be able to communicate properly and effectively.

In this article, we will look at some of the major benefits of communicating properly and effectively at work. Then we will look at some of the initiative MAS has in place to help nurture important skills like communication in young talent.

The Power of Proper Communication

Good communication skills are one of the major defining qualities of a good leader. Effectively sharing your ideas and information with those around you is what makes for good communication. There are many things you can do to communicate better- but why is it so important for you to be able to communicate properly?

It provides purpose and clarity — Proper communication gives those around you a clear idea of what they’re working towards and why. This in turn helps teams build rapport with each other and work together better to achieve both smaller and larger goals.

It avoids confusion and conflict — No one wants to be confused at work. Proper communication makes sure that you and each member of your team know what you need to be doing and when. It limits misunderstandings and conflict. And when conflict does arise, proper communication allows it to be dealt with quickly and easily.

It creates a positive work environment and culture — Shared goals and purpose with lesser conflict creates an environment and culture at work in which team members feel valued. Teams with proper communication have stronger relationships with each other and with their management. This positive environment inspires team members to work better and smarter, resulting in a more productive and engaged overall team.

It creates better relationships with clients and suppliers– Teams don’t work solely within themselves. They work with customers to make sure their needs are met, and with suppliers to ensure the right resources to keep customers happy. Proper communication makes working with customers and suppliers easier and more effective. You understand what your customers and suppliers need and are better able to help them.

It boosts your success in the long-term — In the bigger picture, proper communication at work allows you to be more effective and make a bigger impact to your team and overall business within which you work. Through communicating properly you are able to contribute to your company’s larger goals and build a strong reputation for yourself within your industry.

Communicating effectively through the MAS Skills for Work programme

At MAS, we believe that the key to success is a skilful and talented workforce. The future of the workforce is our youth and through the MAS Skills for Work programme, we aspire to build and nurture essential skills in young talent.

Soft skills are often overlooked in traditional education and the Skills for Work programme looks to give undergraduates the best balance of soft skills combined with universities’ academic excellence for them to be able to thrive in a corporate environment once they join the workforce.

The Skills for Work programme works with five local universities and has benefitted over 2,500 local university students teaching and developing skills like proper communication, personal branding, preparing effective visual presentations, speaking confidently, interacting with others and effective time management.

Staying true to our mission statement, MAS is committed to building young talent in local universities. Learning from 2020, and moving forward in the new normal, the Skills of Work programme has been redesigned to combine online and physical learning to give undergraduates and those just entering the job market the ability to learn important skill sets and gain practical exposure as well. Through these efforts, MAS is creating a diverse and inclusive work environment where everyone can thrive and achieve their fullest potential.
